The Command Panel is a multi layered menu system which runs vertically up the right side of the screen:

It's made up of six stacked panels, which perform most of the major functions in Max. The six panels are:

 

Create:

Modify:
Hierarchy:
Motion:
Display:
Utilities:
You can access each of these menus by clicking on the relevant tab.

Some menus are too large to fit on the screen. You can scroll these menus up and down in the same way that you can scroll the Toolbar:

Move the cursor in between two buttons so that it becomes a hand, then click and drag.

Each Menu in the Command Panel is organised into a series of rollouts. Some of these rollouts are open by default when you open the Menu. Others are closed and will need to be expanded to access their options. 

An open rollout is indicated by a small - sign next to its heading:

A closed rollout is indicated by a small + sign next to its heading:

Click on the +/- sign to open or close the rollout. This way you can manage you menus efficiently.
