The name of each viewport is displayed in its top left hand corner.

You can change the layout of the views by going to the Menu Bar and clicking:

Customize> Viewport Configuration.

This opens up the Viewport Configuration window. Click the Layout Tab, then select a layout and assign views to each window by clicking inside it. Then click ok to accept the new layout.

A Quicker way of assigning views is to use keyboard short-cuts. Whilst a view is active, use the following shortcuts to change it:

F Front

K Back

L Left

R Right

T Top

B Bottom

U User

C Camera

$ Spotlight

P Perspective

The default Max layout is divided in to 4 Views:

 Top, Front, Left and Perspective.

This setup allows you to view objects from at least two different angles, enabling you to see all the axis.

The Top, Left and Front views are Orthographic. This means that they do not have any perspective, making it much easier to align and compare objects. (See page 8 of recommended text for more info).

The Perspective view is used to assess how your models look in a "real" environment. The Perspective view is set to Smooth and Highlights, meaning the objects look solid, whilst the other views are all set to Wireframe, meaning only the object's mesh is displayed.

Navigating Between Views:

To make a view active, you simply need to click inside it. However, if you have an object selected and then you click inside a view, the object will become de-selected.

To get around this problem, I normally click on the actual name of the view (in the top left of each view), as this does not interfere with any other selections you have made.

View Options:

If you right-click on the name of a view, it will open a drop-down menu:

From this Menu you can choose the shading mode for the view. (you will normally just use Smooth and Highlights and Wireframe).

The main use you will have for this menu at this stage is changing which views are displayed. If you move your mouse down to Views, a second menu will appear with a list of possible views. You can select different views from this list
