If you all have a mouse with a jog-wheel (and you all should have!!) you will be pleased to know that your mouse will make viewport navigation ten times easier:

Scrolling the jog-wheel whilst in an active view will zoom the view in and out.

Holding down the jog wheel and moving the mouse whilst in an active view will pan the view around.

The View Controllers are used to navigate within the views. It is important that you become used to constantly altering your views, as this essential for a good workflow. The View Controllers are located in the bottom right hand corner of the screen:

Their functions are as follows:

Zoom. Allows you to change the viewport magnification.

Zoom All. Allows you to change the magnification in all viewports simultaneously.

Zoom Extents. Centers and magnifies the viewport to display all objects.

Zoom Extents All. Centers and magnifies all the viewports to display all objects.

Field of View. Allows you to change the viewing angle of the Perspective viewport.

Pan. Allows you to scroll the viewport in any direction across your scene.

Arc of Rotation. Allows you to rotate around a fixed point in your viewport.

Viewport Min/Max. Allows you to maximise and minimise any viewport. It acts as a toggle button.

These controllers change depending on what kind of view is selected. e.g. Orthographic, Perspective or Camera.

You may notice that some of these buttons are expandable. Try selecting their alternative modes and using the help prompt to find out what they do.

If you Arc Rotate any view other than the Perspective View, it will become a User View. This means it is still Orthographic, but it is viewing the the scene from an arbitrary angle defined by the user. This makes it hard to use this view for precise transformations (discussed in Lecture 2). To change the view back, follow the directions discussed on the previous page.
