The Transform Gizmo can be scaled in the display by using the + and - keys.

Don't worry about the small co-ordinate system in the bottom left hand corner of the view. This is the world co-ordinate system and will be discussed later.

A more hands on way of constraining the axis, is to use the Transform Gizmo. This is the axis indicator which is superimposed onto each object.

It represents whichever Co-ordinate System is being used at the time.

So in the Front View, using the default (View) co-ordinate system, the transform gizmo looks like so:

Using the Select and Move Tool, move the cursor over the Y axis. What happens?

Now move it over the X axis.

Now move it over the Axis Corner.

While the cursor is over either axis, it should turn yellow. If you click and move whilst the axis is yellow, your object will be constrained to that axis.

If you move over the Axis Corner, both axis will turn yellow, meaning you are able to move along both axis.

This can be useful if you have a simple scene. If your scene is cluttered however, you may need to use the constraints in the Toolbar.
