Before we go any further, I need to briefly explain the
purpose of Modifiers and the Modifier
Stack.
Modifiers are what you use
to carry out all of the more complex modifications to models. Extrude
is an an example of a Modifier. Some other
basic Modifiers are Bend, Twist, Taper
and Lathe.
So you get the idea.
You add modifiers to an
object by selecting the object, and then selecting the modifier
you want from the Modifiers Drop-down in the Modify
Panel.
Each Modifier you add to an
object is stored in the Modifier Stack:

This is literally a stack of modifiers. The beauty of
this method of applying modifiers is that it is non-destructive. You can move up
and down through the stack and turn modifiers on and off. If at any point you
decide that you want to remove a modifier, you can do so without affecting the
other modifiers you have added since. To move through the stack, you simply
select the modifier you wish to work on.
Once a Modifier
is selected, you can either:
edit the Modifier
parameters via the rollouts,
toggle it on or off -
or delete it -
I'll leave it at that for the time being.
There's lots more to know, but you just need to know enough to understand
what Modifiers are and how you use them.

Objects" in the recommended text to learn more.
